She is simply indestructible. It defied the floods and the town being threatened by the Turks, the plague, and fires; its deep roots under the Drava River gravel even resisted the horrific grape phylloxera. And still, the vine lived to tell the tale. The vine used by the winemakers from Styria to produce premium wines. The picturesque hills have been cultivated with vineyards since the time of Celts. Since late summer, the beautiful landscape is adorned with bird-scaring rattles, the symbol of all winegrowers. Their rhythmic rattling is a sign that grapes are in the process of ripening. As soon as bird-scaring rattles first sounded in the vineyard, the housewives had to close chickens into their coops and instruct children not to play in the vineyard. This is how much we value grapes in our region. Indulge in the experience offered by wine and take a walk among the vineyards, carry bunches of grapes in grape baskets, and experience how winemakers press their grapes in tubs with their feet. After the harvest, it is time for the traditional wine-worship feast called “likof” where you are sure to indulge in a hearty meal with lots of jubilation, accordion, and folk songs.
